Symbolism in Dracula
Blood: Blood is a symbol that is seen throughout Dracula, when Dracula sucks it from his victims and even when people die from blood loss. Evidently blood is the essence of life, with it one lives, without it one dies. Bur blood can also be considered a symbol of power. As blood is life, it can be understood that the more blood an individual has their ‘lifespan’ increases’ which in turn increases the power they have. Thus, when Dracula consumes the blood of others, he is in a way stealing their power and life from their bodies through blood.
The Brides of Dracula or The Three Women: The three women symbolise the woman that is not ‘proper’ in society. The women are sensual and seductive creatures that can enchant the others to follow their bidding because of their outward appeal. They are not what would be accepted by society. Even Lucy who was a proper women of society prior to her death and transformation into a vampire turned into a seductive creature. This could show that vampirism results in the creation of a corrupt being.
