Johnathan Harker
Johnathan is initially seen as a rather simple man, with his only goal in life being to live comfortably with the one he loves (Mina). He enjoys his job as a solicitor, and is very enthusiastic. He also has a very curious nature that loves solving puzzles, which is what makes him want to discover what Dracula is hiding. His curiosity is what causes him to unveil the reality that is Dracula, which reveals Johnathan’s faith in the Christian religion. Once he figures out what Dracula may be he places a crucifix above his headboard to ward away the devil and the evil that is Dracula.
Although he follows his religious faith in believing that Dracula is some sort of devil, he reverts to his usual scientific mind once out of Dracula’s shadow. He instead believes that he is going crazy and that he is imagining what happened at Dracula’s castle. This shows that Johnathan is very stubborn.
It is also evident that Johnathan loves his wife Mina a great deal, thinking of her in what may seem like his final moments while in Dracula’s Castle. Eventually after he escapes and reunites with Mina he allows her to read his journal of the events of Dracula’s Castle, showing that he trusts Mina. Furthermore, when Johnathan, John, Arthur, Quincey and Van Helsing plot to destroy Dracula, he puts up a brave front. He is an individual who works as a Solicitor, and so it can be assumed that he lacks fighting experience, but he is willing to help destroy Dracula, especially when Mina is being targeted by Dracula. By the end of the book Johnathan has changed a great deal and is stronger, both mentally and physically after he kills Dracula.
