Plot Summary
This novel is written as a series of journal entries, letter and phonograph recordings that are mainly told in the point of view of several of the protagonists, mainly Johnathan Harker, Lucy Westnra, Mina Murray, and Dr. John Seward. These characters play significant roles within the plot of Dracula.
This story begins with Johnathan Harker, a solicitor from London, describing his travels to his new client Count Dracula’s home in Transylvania. Apparently Count Dracula is wishes to purchase land within London, and had Johnathan arrive to aid with legal support and to provide information on London. Initially, Johnathan’s stay within Dracula’s Castle is one of great pleasure, yet as time goes by Johnathan finds himself a prisoner to his host, which increases his curiosity. In order to find an escape, and fulfill his curious nature, Johnathan encounters three women who wish to ‘eat’ him.
But he is rescued by Dracula, who Johnathan now considers a devil, not having completely understood what Dracula is or why Dracula needs him. Though, once Dracula has fulfilled his need for Johnathan, he leaves Johnathan as a victim to the 3 ‘brides of Dracula’ from earlier and travels to London. Dracula travels to London on a ship, using the blood of the crew men to sustain him for the journey. When Dracula, finally arrives, he searches for Johnathan Harker’s fiancé Mina Murray and he finds her along with her close friend Lucy.
Through Mina’s journals and letters, it is learned that Lucy was proposed to by Arthur Holmwood, John Seward and Quincy Morris, all of whom were completely in love with her. Though Lucy only accepts Arthur’s proposal staying friends with her other two suitors. In these letters it is also revealed that Mina’s worry for an unresponsive Johnathan has caused her to go to stay with Lucy. During her stay Mina notices Lucy becoming paler, more tired and sleepwalking constantly, but eventually Mina is sent a letter revealing Johnathan’s, who is surprisingly alive, whereabouts. Torn between her love for her friend and fiancé, Mina decides to go to Johnathan, leaving Lucy in the hands of her mother, but soon Lucy’s unanswered illness begins to take a toll on her body.
As a result, Lucy’s mother invited Dr. John Seward, who works at an asylum, to check on Mina. But because he has no idea on what may be causing Lucy’s illness, he invites his previous mentor Van Helsing to look at Lucy. Van Helsing instantly discovers the cause of Lucy’s illness and rapid loss of blood, but doesn’t reveal it and instead begins blood transfusions to save Lucy. Sadly, Lucy eventually perishes and is buried, but right after her death various children are said to be stalked and taken.
Due to the rapid kidnappings of the children, Van Helsing decides to reveal the supernatural world to Seward, Morris and Holmwood, by exposing the new undead Lucy as a Vampire, a creature of the night that uses the blood of its victims as a source of nutrition. Appalled and horrified by the revelations they all decide to kill Lucy’s undead self to put her at rest and begin they’re hunt for Dracula. Eventually Van Helsing learns of both Johnathan and, his now wife, Mina, reading but Johnathan’s encounters with Dracula through the letters of correspondence between Mina and Lucy prior to her death. Using this, Van Helsing invited both of them to join him and the other men in their plot to kill Dracula.
By using the knowledge that they already have on Dracula, they investigate his reason for coming to London, and discover his ‘boxes of power’ that he has spread across London. They use Van Helsing’s knowledge on the supernatural to ‘destroy’ the boxes, and slowly cripple Dracula. But Dracula learning of their plans begins to target Mina and she slowly falls prey to the same symptoms that Lucy suffered from while alive.
With the death of Rienfield, a ‘zoophagus’ individual in the asylum, who has had prior contact with Dracula, it is revealed that Dracula is drinking from Mina and that he has now created a spiritual link to Mina that is slowly turning her in to a vampire. Now desperate to protect Mina, the men vigorously search for Dracula’s last box, only to find that Dracula escaped to Transylvania with it.
Using Mina’s connection to Dracula they travel to Transylvania where they split into three groups of two in order to trap Dracula. While they are travelling, Van Helsing and Mina encounter the three vampire women, who attempt to take Mina, but they are unable to. Eventually the men trap Dracula and fight his controlled minions before they eventually kill him. Regretfully Quincey is fatally injured during the fight and succumbs to his injuries before he too perishes. The novel finished years later with Johnathan and Mina as they visit Dracula’s Castle, remembering both their friends and the innocence that they lost.
